There are a few factors that you need to consider before buying a dirt bike either for yourself or someone else.

By the Numbers

When buying a dirt bike, there are two numbers you need to consider: seat height and engine size. The seat height is usually measured in inches and is determined by the height of the rider. Engine size is measured in cubic centimeters (cc). The rider’s weight and experience level are the most important factors to consider when choosing a bike with the best engine size. If you are just starting out, it’s smart to start with a smaller engine while you get the hang of riding and handling the bike.

Seat Height

Just like with an ordinary bicycle, it’s important to get a dirt bike with the correct seat height. You do use your feet to control the dirt bike, so you want to have enough of your foot on the ground, but not too much. If your feet are flat on the ground while sitting up on the bike, it is probably too small for you. If too much of your foot is on the ground, you can injure yourself while riding. On the other hand, if your toes just barely touch the ground, the bike is too tall. You want the balls of your feet to reach the ground, or enough of your foot that you can balance the bike comfortably without having your feet flat on the ground.

 

Engine Size

Picking the right engine size is a little more involved than getting the right seat height. You need to take into account both the rider’s weight and experience level. Bikes made for kids (under age 15) usually have engines ranging from 50cc to 150cc. Older kids who are experienced riders can handle bikes with larger engines, but you do want to make sure you’re not putting a kid on a bike that is too big for them. A good rule of thumb is that a new rider who is under five feet should start with a bike under the 110cc range. If you’re buying for an adult who is a first-time rider, it’s best to stay under the 250cc range. Heavier riders may want to go bigger to ensure that the bike has enough suspension to take bumps smoothly.
